Jorge was inspired by his father Rodrigo Lara Bonilla, who served as the Colombian Minister of Justice in 1983. Lara Bonilla declared war against the drug cartels, particularly the Cartel of Medellin, and their political and economic allies. He was the first political figure to publicly denounce the illegal activities of Pablo Escobar, which led to Escobar losing his seat as a congressman in the Colombian House of Representatives. Furthermore, Lara Bonilla ordered the operation that destroyed 'Tranquilandia', the largest cocaine production laboratory ever found, which belonged to the Medellin Cartel. However, this operation cost Lara Bonilla his life on April 30th, 1984.
